Two years ago, a reforestation campaign began, a hopeful endeavor to breathe life back into the land. It was a project marked by ambition: 607 plants set to root across 1.678 hectares, shielded by the humble embrace of bamboo fencing.

Tapping information about alive plants

The sun bore down, relentless and scorching, as the terrain rose steeply, challenging every step. Yet, determination was in no short supply. Alongside Charlotte, an Australian intern with Kanchan Nepal, and Dil Bahadur Bhujel, a local community member, I set out to monitor the survival of our green charges.

Armed with Kobo Toolbox on our mobile devices, Charlotte meticulously recorded data while I managed the remaining tasks. Convincing Dil Bahadur Bhujel to join our cause was a feat in itself, but his eventual assistance proved invaluable. Our survey revealed a survival rate of a quarter of the plants. The fallen likely succumbed to grazing animals or the simple, yet profound, enemy of neglect.

Amidst the underbrush, we discovered survivors: lemon, tejpatta, apple, and walnut trees, with lemon trees reigning in abundance. The bamboo fences, once sturdy guardians, now stood in disrepair, underscoring the need for robust protection against the elements and fauna.

Despite the adversities, our monitoring mission was a success, thanks to Dil Bahadur Bhujel’s generous contribution of three hours. Our efforts were not just about counting saplings; they were about nurturing hope.

Our observations extended beyond flora. A dry pond, devoid of water storage, marked another concern for the community. Yet, amidst these challenges, there was a moment of sweet reprieve—the ripening golden raspberries. Plucking and savoring them was a joyous interlude, a first-time experience for me and a delightful discovery for Charlotte.

The journey in Hansapur is a narrative of growth, struggle, and the small victories that inspire continued effort. It’s a story that unfolds with each plant that takes root, each barrier overcome, and each taste of nature’s bounty. It’s a chronicle of green revival, where every hand that helps is a brushstroke in this living landscape.

The small village of Majhkot is on a mission, a green mission to be precise. Following the footsteps of their previous success in Hansapur, Next day we moved to next rain communities with other associates of KN. The community, along with the support of Kanchan Nepal, embarked on a monitoring session to assess the progress of their reforestation efforts. It’s a tale of dedication and hope, as the villagers strive to bring back the lush greenery that once defined their land.

The numbers tell a story of resilience and challenge. Out of 476 saplings planted, 176 stood tall, marking a survival rate of 37%. It’s a testament to the community’s hard work and the tenacity of nature. The tejpatta, or Bay Leaf plants, emerged as the hardiest, with lemon trees close behind. These plants, with their fragrant leaves and tangy fruits, are more than just survivors; they’re symbols of the village’s enduring spirit.

Protection measures for these green warriors were a mixed bag. While half of the protective structures remained intact, safeguarding the saplings against the elements and stray animals, the rest were either broken or missing. Interestingly, the deceased plants’ protections were still in good shape, presenting an opportunity to repurpose them for the survivors—a lesson in resourcefulness and sustainability.

The proximity of the plants to several Pokharis (small ponds) was a strategic choice, enhancing soil moisture and infiltration. However, this closeness also brought to light another issue—the unchecked growth of wild plants around the dried-up Pokharis, a concern that the community is keen to address.

Amidst the greenery and the challenges, there was a moment of reverence. Charlotte and I had the honor of meeting the “Rain Lady” of Majhkot, an octogenarian whose blessings are as sought-after as the rain in this reforestation journey. Her wisdom and well-wishes are as much a part of Majhkot’s landscape as the newly planted saplings.

The road ahead for Majhkot is filled with both hope and hurdles. But with the community’s unwavering commitment and the support of organizations like Kanchan Nepal, the dream of a rejuvenated, verdant Majhkot is not just a possibility but a future in the making. Let’s keep an eye on this village as they continue to nurture their home, one sapling at a time.
